During his travel to the Upper River Region, Ambassador Carl Paschall met with three of the Public Affairs Section supported Competitive College Clubs – two in URR and one in the Central River Region. During remarks at the Fatoto Senior Secondary School the Ambassador said being part of club is a responsibility, and he applauded the members of the club for fulfilling that role. The clubs were established as part of an EducationUSA initiative. Working directly with school administrators and teacher coordinators, the Public Affairs Section sponsors clubs at multiple schools in rural and marginalized communities throughout the country. Club members are selected from the best performing students at each school and they are provided with valuable resources, such as standardized test preparation resources, books on U.S. History and culture, and tutoring. The Clubs also provide extracurricular and community service activities. The Ambassador applauded the students at all three stops for their high achievement, encourage them to set and achieve goals, and presented them with U.S./Gambia friendship pins. He emphasized the importance of mentors, and encouraged the students to identify professionals in fields they are interested in to see if they would be willing to be their mentors. He also thanked the coordinators and administrators for their constant commitment to helping young Gambians achieve their dreams through education.
