CDA Seaver Congratulates Gambia 2019 IVLP Participants

Charge d’Affaires Shelly Seaver and PAO Kathryn Edwards met with young Gambian leaders who will participate in 2019 International Visitor Leadership Programs (IVLP) in the United States.  Ms. Juma Baldeh, a tech enthusiast who provides volunteer training and support for girls to pursue STEAM education, will participate in the program, “Advancing Women in STEAM Fields.” Ms. Ngenarr Yassin-Jeng, a barrister and Communications Officer for the NGO Think Young Women, will attend, “NGO Management.” Mr. Peter Sylva, an assistant superintendent in the Gambia Police Force and a police training instructor will participate in the program, “Countering Violent Extremism – Community Strategies.” And Mr. Marr Nyang, founder of #TheGambiaParticipates, an online campaign to champion civic education and engagement, democracy, and transparency, will take part in the program, “Empowering Youth to Strengthen Communities and Prevent Violence.” Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Seaver congratulated the participants on their professional and leadership accomplishments and conveyed her hopes that the program will empower them to continue to promote democratic development in The Gambia and contribute in their communities.  The Gambia’s IVLP Alumni hold many notable positions, including former Gambian president Jawara and Current Fisheries Minister James Gomez.
