Embassy Grants Over US$55,000 for Entrepreneurship Development

The Public Diplomacy section of U.S. Embassy Banjul granted $55,000 (2.5 Million Dalasis) to the Startup Incubator Gambia. The grant signing was presided over by the United States Ambassador to The Gambia, C. Patricia Alsup at the Incubator’s complex in Kanifing. This latest grant supports the successful development of young Gambian entrepreneurs and will solidify the Incubator’s independence and ensure its sustainability. This additional funding brings the total U.S. investment in the Startup Incubator to more than $200,000 (D9.4M).

In her remarks at the event, Ambassador Alsup assured the audience of the U.S. Government’s continued support to the development and empowerment of Gambian youth, especially through entrepreneurship.

“In a country where 60 percent of the population is under 30, the need to create a supportive and innovative business environment for young people to translate their ideas into reality cannot be overemphasized,” she remarked.

Since its inception, the Startup Incubator has received 600 applications, accepted 62 clients, and graduated 42 entrepreneurs during its two years in operation. The current group of clients will graduate in December.
