Gambians Congratulated for Democratic Change

The U.S. Africa Bureau Chief hailed The Gambian people for their perseverance and commitment to democratic change. Speaking during her recent visit to the country for the official inauguration of President Adama Barrow, she particularly applauded the collective peaceful efforts of Gambians during the political impasse between December 9, 2016 and January 21, 2017.

“Through passion, sacrifice, and cooperation, Gambians ensured a peaceful transfer of power. The world has a lot to learn from this small country. I congratulate each Gambian for the calm and peaceful way in which you conducted yourselves throughout the six-week political impasse. In many other countries around the world, political uncertainty of that kind would have brought rioting in the streets, violence, looting, even death. But Gambians heeded the coalition leaders’ call for peace,” she remarked.
