Meet Ebrima Sonko, 2019 Mandela Washington Fellow

A graduate of the University of The Gambia, Ebrima works as a Research Officer with the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC), which is mandated to investigate the human rights violations of the ex-President from 1994-2016 and his supporters.  He is also an emerging civil society leader and worked with a 2017 Mandela Fellowship alumnus to set up The Gambia’s first ever Commission on Political Debates.  As the Administrative Secretary, Ebrima played an active role in staging the first-ever Presidential Debates in The Gambia in 2016.  Political debates are critical to increase awareness, transparency, and participation.  An aspiring human rights lawyer, he continues to use his knowledge of the law and experience to work with many youth-led and community-based organizations to promote and protect human rights, rule of law and democracy.
