Meet Mandela Fellow Aziz Bala-Gaye

Aziz Bala-Gaye is an economist with The Gambia’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Regional Integration, where he formulates policy in the trade, industrial growth and development, and medium, small and micro enterprise (MSME) promotion and employment sectors.  Although only 25, Aziz sits on policy committees and provides analysis and information about economic trends, and recommendations for policy formulation and implementation at the national and regional levels.  Aziz is the focal person for the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS), working to address issues relating to trade promotion and facilitation, and market access, among others.   Aziz is concerned about the country’s lack of access to critical capital for startups, high interest rate for loans at the banks, rising poverty and youth unemployment; problems he hopes to work on in his post-Fellowship programs.
