PD Launches Five-month Training for Local Journalists

Public Diplomacy Banjul launched a five-month online training program for Gambian broadcasters on June 8. Staff worked with local radio stations to identify 25 of the most promising radio journalists in the early stages of their careers. These journalists will complete a two-month series of courses customized for this program by The Poynter Institute of Media Studies, a non-profit journalism school based in St. Petersburg, Florida. Following their online training, reporters will produce weekly current events shows on their respective radio stations for three months to practice their new investigative reporting skills. Expectations are that this program will not only build much-needed capacity among Gambian journalists, but also solidify the Barrow government’s commitment to a free and open press, and introduce professional investigative reporting to a Gambian public eager for public discussion about the issues of the day.
