President’s Malaria Initiative Supports Cross-border Cooperation

On November 26, The Gambia’s Health and Social Welfare minister, Dr. Isatou Touray, launched a three-day bilateral meeting between the National Malaria Control Programs of Senegal and The Gambia to plan collaboration of the 2019 universal coverage of long lasting insecticide nets (LLINs) along the extensive cross-border region of the two countries. The event was funded by the Global Fund along with participation of the World Health Organization, RBM Partnership to end Malaria and Senegal’s U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) and other malaria partners. The objective is to ensure that all communities along the border are covered and to improve overall coordination of both countries campaigns. As mosquitoes know no borders, promoting cross-border coordination is critical for accelerating progress towards malaria elimination.
