U.S. Embassy Banjul is accepting applications for the Summer, 2019 Study of the U.S. Institute for Scholars. The Study of the U.S. Institutes for Scholars are intensive post-graduate level academic programs with integrated study tours whose purpose is to provide foreign scholars and administrators the opportunity to deepen their understanding of U.S. society, culture, values, and institutions. The Study of the U.S. Institutes for Scholars will take place during six weeks beginning in or after June 2019. Qualified candidates must submit a complete application packet to PublicDiplomacyBanjul@state.gov by January 1, 2020.
Each Institute includes a four-week academic residency component and up to two weeks of an integrated study tour to another region of the United States. Prospective applicants are encouraged to visit this website: http://exchanges.state.gov/susi. to obtain general information about the Institutes. The U.S. Institutes for Scholars in the summer will be on the following themes in U.S. Studies: American Culture and Values, Journalism and Media, Religious Freedom and Pluralism, U.S. Economics and Business, U.S. Foreign Policy, Youth, Workforce Development, and Closing the Skills Gap.
Who can apply?
Study of the U.S. Institutes are highly competitive. Priority will be given to candidates who have firm plans to enhance, update or develop courses and/or educational materials with a U.S. studies focus or component; who have no prior or only limited experience in the United States; and who have special interest in the program subject areas as demonstrated through past scholarship, accomplishments, and professional duties. Candidates should be mid-career, typically between the ages of 30-50, highly-motivated and experienced scholars and professionals generally from institutions of higher education or research focused organizations. Candidates should hold graduate degrees, with strong English proficiency. U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States are not eligible.

- A statement of interest, discussing why you wish to participate in this program. Include what you wish to gain from and bring to the program and describe your plans to amplify the impact of your participation beyond your own knowledge and research.
Incomplete application packets will not be considered.
Final candidate selection will take place in Washington, DC. Successful applicants will be notified in April of 2020.
